Okietravellers Dave, I spent the first 28 years of my life living about 30-40 miles north of Whittington and drove to northern Illinois several times in the fall (and winter). (Once I drove from Champaign to Chicago with I-57 covered with ice.) With that said, I feel y...  more

Skipper Dave Perhaps is looks like "overthinking" but just my way of researching my options. I usually lay out a plan and then throw it up on a couple of different forums for feedback. Then rethink, tweek and make changes. I'll PM you about the route.

Just wondering how the snowbirds coming from the cold and snow handle their home when it comes to the water. Are people winterizing before they leave or turning down the furnace and having a friend/relative/neighbor check on the place? And what about snow removal?

Larry & Lynn Simmons We have a neighbor check once a week on the house and flush the toilets. We turn the heat down to 55 degrees and shut off the water heater. Our mailman is great. He packages up our mail and sends it to us once a week.

Indy Glenn We just put in a forward mail slip at our PO - - they send everything but "junk"! It's great. 2 weeks before we get home - we have them hold mail - this way we catch anything already in the forward stage.

Capt Larry & BG Ditto to most of the above in one form or another.  An additional "idea" to consider that I don't think I saw - we have a "main shut off valve on the incoming water line just before the meter - turn it OFF!  Two years ago in an exceptional cold ...  more

Larry & Lynn Simmons We shut the water off once. Came home after 13 weeks and turned it back on. But the all 3 toilet rubber seals failed miserably, water everywhere when flushed. So now we have them flushed once a week now while we are gone by our neighbor on his walk thru.

Skipper Dave I think its probably best to leave the cabinet doors open below sinks on outside walls to allow for at least some heat circulation.  Thanks Capt Larry & BG for the dishwasher story. Think I'll turn off the main and leave the dishwasher door open as ...  more

Benji & Sandra I moved to FL from
NY 12 years ago my only advice is when I leave FL for any period of time I put a "shot" of bleach in all the sink and shower traps it prevents mold from building up.
