Hi, new to the group! Anyone had an experience kayaking Ecofina in Northwest FL?
We are still new to kayaking and wondered if this would be safe for us?

lizzie Welcome to the group. Do you mean Econfina River (Taylor County between Perry and Newport) or Econfina Creek (Washington/Bay Counties near Panama City)? If it is the Creek, the upper portion is the only Canoe Trail in Florida designated "for experienced p...  more Hide 1 Reply

T&J Saunders Thanks, Lizzie, for the info!  It's Ecofina Creek near Panama City.  Family members who live nearby had mentioned the recent rainfall so I was concerned about the current being too swift for inexperienced paddlers, meaning me! Any info you could...  more

I need a recommendation for a kayak carrier for the top of my truck. I pull a TT, so I need something to mount on the top of the cab.

Michael Rutledge I use a "universal" ladder rack that I picked up at northern tool for under 200 for our 15.5 canoe. Comes on and off in a about 10 minutes for when I'm not carrying it. that pic is on my old chevy, I use the same rack on the new dodge
    • Gloria ( The shy one )
Lee Wenk You've given us not a lot of info, but I always have an opinion.  I assume when you say TT that you are NOT talking about a 5th wheel.  If this is so, you have more options.  They make rear mounts for boats that attach to the sides of the t...  more Hide 1 Reply

Gloria ( The shy one ) Yes, NOT a fifth. Plus I have a cover on the back of my truck, so anything that fits inside the bed is out. I have a 10ft. cheap kayak. But it does what I want. I’m planning on going a few 1000 miles this year so I want something secure.

Michael Rutledge depending on the type of cover you have, you have options. I have a tri fold, soft cover. on and off easy. I'm not a full timer, so I either have it in the garage or the ladder rack. the roof mount racks were a bit pricey for me. couldn't see spending sev...  more

lizzie Love your photo of the canoe shower at Ochlockonee River SP. My son is a Ranger there and he built those showers from a pile of old rental canoes they had back of the shop. Sorry I didn;t know you were nearby, we could have paddled together. Hide 1 Reply

Michael Rutledge We try to hit one of the state parks atleast once a month. Ochlockonee was our maiden canoe trip. What a disaster, but we learned a lot. The shower is a neat touch and a great repurpose of unused items. I'm sure our paths will cross in the future, if they...  more

Alex & Nick We have two inflatable kayaks made by advanced elements. They are very durable with a rigid “skeleton” that folds up into a bag about the size of a large suit case. The tandem weighs about 60lbs and the single is about 40lbs. We are able to fit both kay...  more

lizzie I also had an Advanced Elements tandem kayak when we traveled in a RoadTrek. It was a great boat. Definitely not a "toy".
    • CDR Warren
Lee Wenk You might also look at an Oru kayak.  These things fold up and quite light and seem to be more solid and probably faster than an inflatable.  They won't work well in whitewater and they are a bit pricey.
I have seen shorter boats mounted ...  more

Steve&Tina Check out Sea Eagle inflatables. Cheaper ones for about $300 to much better ones up to around $1200. Before you buy check the whitewater rating. Most are up to class II, several are class III but they do have a white water inflatable rated to class IV. Yo...  more

CDR Warren I have been looking at them. I keep wondering if they are just big kid toys, not a real Kayak. Reviews seem to indicate otherwise. The one that looks the best is the 370 pro tandem.

Debbie & Jeff Miller After losing our hard shell kayaks, Thule rack & all in a wind gust, we opted for Sea Eagle Fast Track inflatables.  I was concerned about tracking, but they are great!  Spendy, but worth it.  Nice option for RVers

CDR Warren Thanks for the reply. Someone else mentioned the fast track and they do look good. Since I haven’t kayaked since I had a small ocean kayak I think it best to start at a lower price point to make sure my wife and I enjoy it. I think the 370 price point is ...  more

lizzie I will chime in again. I am an open boater (solo canoe) and don't really care for kayaks. After we sold the Advanced Elements boat, I bought a Grabner inflatable canoe. These boats are made in Europe and designed for extreme whitewater. The are expensive ...  more

Steve&Tina The 370 is a good starter boat, just be sure and buy the upgrade seats. The seats that come with the pro may already be the better seats. if not they sit to low in the boat and are not as comfortable. If you decide to upgrade later on, the 485ft is a grea...  more
