February 18, 2019We have a question, can you run your generator why boondocked at Walmart, cracker barrel, or other retail locations??

Jim O'Briant February 18, 2019 In general, yes. But check your surroundings. There are a few Walmart parking lots that have private residences or motels next door, and a LOT of Cracker Barrels that do. In these cases, common courtesy dictates that we run our generators as little as pos...  more

Kay and Russ Wallace February 18, 2019 Yes, but dry camping for an overnight stop in a parking lot is not boondocking. No grills, chairs or awning in parking lots. You are not “camping” when you stop in a parking lot for the night.

Rosana Clan February 18, 2019 We don't because it's so noisy. One of the reasons we don't go to a rest stop with the trucks running all night. Also, it's probably just me but I don't like things running when I am asleep. Have heard of carbon monoxide issues.

Diana808 February 18, 2019 Out west we talked to managers at two different Walmarts asking if we could overnight with our slides out.  Both times the answer was no, and that included no generators.  We decided to forget Walmart and instead use FeeCampsites.net, a boondock...  more

Ellen White February 19, 2019 Diana & Michael, I've not heard of DaysEndDirectory-- do you use it a lot?  Is it mostly paid with a small fee or truly free boondock sites? I looked it up and I am a member of the Escapees Club as well, just joined a month or so ago.

Carol & Wayne February 19, 2019 Ellen, Days End is quite useful once you get used to the way it is organized. I only use it for FREE sites, there may be some paid ones though. Cost of membership is paid off in one night!

Pianotuna February 18, 2019 I would run the generator--but NOT while sleeping.

Bruce & Linda (Omnibus) February 19, 2019 Agreed.  Carbon monoxide is the issue.  Anyone dry-camping, even for one night, should have an adequate house battery system to get them through the night and be able to get it recharged the next day.  Whether or not an inverter is needed d...  more

Suzan and Art February 19, 2019 Agreed with above posts but make sure you lock it if it is a free standing type.

Neisha Wright February 21, 2019 You should never run your generator all night no matter where you are, out of respect for other campers. Try solar if you need all night power.
