John & DianaWhy didn't I think of that? Tips and Tricks:
April 25, 2019My grey tank needs a thorough cleaning. A quarter century of dish washing debris has built up and affects the dumping time.
I cannot see the tank. It is buried somewhere in the structure.
Chemical additives don't seem to have much affect.

    The question: c...  more

John & Diana April 25, 2019 Searched Tank Tech. Reviews not positive enough to justify the cost. Thanks for the suggestion.

TeamFoxy April 25, 2019 I can't speak to how HR did things, but our current and past RV's have had more than one plumbing vent, one in the kitchen area and one in the bath area; neither one necessarily directly over the tank. Otherwise there would be a vacuum and nothing would d...  more

John & Diana April 25, 2019 I like your suggestion and will give it a shot.  This is my grey -not black- water tank and it does have it's own roof stack. The tank drains and does not back up. It just drains very slowly near the end at the dump station. Black...  more

RVNomads April 25, 2019 Had gauge problems with both of our holding tanks and had great success with Tank Blaster.  Had to do it twice for black tank.  Now I use it once year on both.   www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D3XYRG5/ref=p...  more

John & Diana April 25, 2019 I have the tank blaster and it does work very well in the black tank since you send it down the toilet bowl.
I cannot use it in the grey tank.

Glamperjan April 25, 2019 No don't do that! Use a solution of water and borax water softener. Dump it in there and drive around it'll slosh get all kinds of gunk out. Power washer might blow your pipe.

John & Diana April 25, 2019 I should have said I would use a garden hose on full blast. I understand my power washer would cause me to replace all the plumbing and tank. Hey! That would fix the sludge problem! I have tried all kinds of chemicals and potions with wild, s...  more

Glamperjan April 25, 2019 Could fabric softener down both the black tank and the Gray tank it makes the side slinky. Works great. Nothing sticks to the monitors.

TeamFoxy April 28, 2019 I might also add that in our old Itasca, the GW tank was wide and long but only about 6" high. So not much head pressure and also if the slope we were sitting on shifted the water away from the drain the last part was really slow. But running the hose in ...  more

Bruce & Linda (Omnibus) April 25, 2019 We have had our waste tanks cleaned with a high pressure spray, but the hose was put in from the discharge pipe/valve, not down the vent stack.  Both times we had this done (different companies at RV rallies) the service provider had a special nozzle...  more

M&D&Boo April 25, 2019 If you are in Phoenix area, there is a guy who cleans it from the drain connection. Like a power wash but with a hose. Worked well for us

John Aye April 25, 2019 There are services that pressure clean tanks.  If you have a service person you use, I would suggest asking that person.  If not, check with a local RV park for a recommendation.

Vanessa on the road April 25, 2019 Remove the trap under the kitchen sink and run the hose in that way...maybe even the same type of attachment you use down the toilet unless it is not pliable to bend in the pipes to get to the tank.

TheClearyClan April 25, 2019 I think every rig is built differently. Our gray tank is directly below the tub/shower.

Mark&Steven April 25, 2019 A few squirts of dish washing machine liquid detergent, like Cascade, down the drain, with the grey tank valve closed. Follow that with a few gallons of HOT water, and let it stay there until the tank is full, then empty it. It may take 2 or 3 cycles befo...  more

ValorieK April 28, 2019 You could try an enzyme based drain treatment and lots of water. It takes time (3 or more days in my sticks and bricks to break through a clog) but these really work well on liquefying organic matter. There are also attachments that you can put on your se...  more

John & Ann Martin April 28, 2019 I've been told by RV Service Technicians that use Pine Power, pour it into the tank, add a couple gallons of water, drive around where it gets sloshed around a lot!  Drain and flush and repeat as needed.  Dollar General or Wal-Mart sells it.

Bruce & Linda (Omnibus) April 28, 2019 We have used PineSol around and Calgon.  It’s formula that has been for a long time.  Does it work?  Well, it doesn’t hurt.

TheClearyClan April 28, 2019 I can just see it, weaving down a deserted road, getting pulled over by a cop, getting asked why I'm weaving and telling him I'm cleaning the holding tanks.

John & Ann Martin April 29, 2019 Pine Power is a different product from PineSol.

Robbie & Alice April 30, 2019 Use an enzyme based cleaner like Happy Camper or Unique.  Both brands have a special type of tank cleaner.

Bounder Travelers May 2, 2019 At some big box hardware stores they have products for septic tanks, probably enzyme. It is much lower cost than RV/Marine products. Anyone tried those products?

Robbie & Alice May 3, 2019 Rid-X is probably what you are thinking about, but I would caution that it may destroy the rubber seals in your hoses and valves.

John & Diana May 13, 2019 I tried a couple of solutions with mixed results. The garden hose sent up the dump outlet got stuck for awhile in the bends but did break up some of the grease sludge ( I should have used an old hose with the threaded end cut off). ...  more
