May 24, 2019We’re new to RVing & own a Winnebago Motorhome & are thinking about towing a car when we travel. Does anyone have advise on “flat” towing & what kind of car should be towed versus towing a car with 2 wheels on ground? Very confused.

Bruce & Linda (Omnibus) May 24, 2019 Yes; this has long been the definitive guide to vehicles that can be towed “4-down”.  However, absolutely check the owners manual for that specific vehicle.  The information is often listed as “Recreational Towing”.

Stan and Lisa H May 24, 2019 We flat tow a 2018 Jeep Rubicon, Jeeps are the simplest to hook up/disconnect and go in my humble opinion. Flat towing is more expensive but more convenient. Towing 2 wheels down (dolly) requires you to unload your vehicle, unhook the dolly, and store t...  more

Patte M May 24, 2019 Exactly Stan, we crawl on the ground and under the car to secure it to the dolly.  The whole process is a 20 min operation, if we get it lined up on the first run at the dolly.  Flat Tow is on my bucket list.

Hank & Shirleen May 24, 2019 We tow a Ford Explorer 4down, with Roadmaster sterling, but use an air brake system by Roadmaster!

John David (US TOUR ONE) May 24, 2019 IMHO, Towing with two wheels on the ground is inconvienient, but it allows you to tow a front wheel drive car whose transmission is otherwise untowable and you can tow all day long. When you arrive at your destination, most times you'll have find the real...  more

Gloria and Tom Portwood May 24, 2019 We tow a Jeep Cherokee. But you should definitely check out the towing guide mentioned above.  It tells you what vehicles you can tow and any special instructions you have to do before you tow.

Anthony & Nancy Pewonski May 24, 2019 I have flat towed using the NSA ready brute tow bar, 4 down for over a year and 1/2 and it works great. I tow a 2010 Honda CVR auto trans. Plenty of options out there, I have tried about 5 different ways over the last 20yrs, all work, I perfer 4 down.

Mitch & Mary Helms May 24, 2019 Here is a listing of what can be flat-towed.  This is the 2019 listing.  You can find a listing for each year of vehicle that you are looking for.   http://www.motorhome.com/download-dinghy-guides/

Patte M May 24, 2019 We tow with a tow dolly, which means our rear wheels are on the ground. We made this choice because of a time crunch when going full-time. We sold everything in a 3 week period and moved into the RV.  We did not have time to purchase a flat tow vehic...  more

Papa Wayne and MJSooner May 24, 2019 We just switched from dolly towing a Honda CRV, to flat towing a Jeep Wrangler. The flat tow is so much easier and I think safer. I also think our Jayco Precept handles better with the flat tow. We bought the Blue Ox system and really like it. I don't kno...  more

Curt and Linda May 24, 2019 We use the Blue Ox system. We have a Chevy Malibu and it works great. Question to ask yourself. Do you have the room to store the trailer for the two wheel system?

Tom & Laura Boden’s Adventures May 24, 2019 We have a Winnebago Sunova 33C and flat tow a 2012 Honda CRV. The nice part about flat towing is there is no Dolly to worry where to but it on site , some places have a drop off area. Some Dolly's have electric brakes , some have surge brakes. We have use...  more

Jim4ua May 24, 2019 As a former towing operator I suggest using a tow dolly. No sense in putting an unnecessary strain on your towed vehicles transmission.

Brian & Terry May 24, 2019 We Flat Tow a 2014 Ford Focus and /or a 2011 Chevy Avalanche. Both are simple to hook up and un hook. Takes 5 or 6 minutes. We tow with a diesel pusher so you do not even know the toad is there except for monitoring it in the rear camera. Both of our vehi...  more

Dennis / Maureen Lendzion May 24, 2019 You need to check the cars owner manual to see if you can flat tow or dolly tow. Only some vehicles can and just because they could in some model years doesn’t mean they can in all. I flat tow and It cost me in 2018, 2200.00 for base plate and hitch. I p...  more

Jeff and Sandra Doan May 27, 2019 I flat tow using a Blue Ox towbar system. The cost, including my Patriot Brake System was about $2400. M & C Rving May 27, 2019 We flat tow a 2007 Honda CRV with an installed braking system. I have seen people struggle to put in a physical braking systems. I have watched people laying on the groundwork hook up theirs car to the tow dolly. Our next tad will be flat towable. FMCA pu...  more
