Cinn Why didn't I think of that? Tips and Tricks:
February 21, 2020Why is an RV refrigerator called a 3-way? Mine runs on propane except when the rig is plugged in or the generator is running, both of which is considered alternating current, yes? So that would only be 2-way: propane or electric. The igniter for the propa...  more

dalyn8 February 21, 2020 Some fridges run on Propane, 120V, or on 12volt battery power. I am not sure if many of the newer fridges do, I think it is just older fridges. Cheers

Art February 21, 2020 Both of the 3-way I have owned will run on just 12 volt. Just not very well. You should have a switch which allows you to choose one of the three.  When I choose to use 110 or 12 volt the propane turns off and needs the pilot light relit.

pokeysRVadventures February 21, 2020 From Laura's link:  A “3-way fridge” usually refers to an absorption RV refrigerator that can run off of AC Power, LP gas, and DC Power. This fridge can run off of shore power (or a generator), propane, or house batteries.

Dwight & Pam February 21, 2020 Actually most if not all absorption refrigerators can run from 120 VAC, 12 VDC, and propane. Some newer RVs have refrigerators than run only on 12 VDC.

Bandit455 February 21, 2020 This wasn’t spelled out, but keep in mind. ALL modes (110vac, propane, 12vdc) will require 12vdc to power up circuit boards. Just hate for someone to head out with no power source and expect it to run off of propane alone...

Dan1960 February 21, 2020 Some newer rv's with full size, or larger refrigerators have eliminated the 3 way option. Ours only runs on propane or 112 volts....

TeamFoxy February 22, 2020 I've never had a 3 way fridge. Always. Propane or A.C. power. Our first unit required holding a button down until the flame first lit and did not automatically cycle from propane to A.C.. after that all 3 changed automatically. Only our first water heater...  more

Jim & Sharon Ham February 22, 2020 With our first RV many years ago, the three-way frig was standard issue.  Propane, 110 volts, and 12 volts.  Ours had two separate electric heaters for DC and AC.  Had to replace the 12 volt heater unit a few times.  The trend in recen...  more

Dan-n-Jo February 24, 2020 Years ago I had a Palomino popup camper that did not have a propane tank, the small fridge in it had a 12Vdc/110Vac switch and had a cord that had to be plugged into a special outlet to run off of 12Vdc.

TrixieRebel March 9, 2020 Our Trailmanor had a 3 way...our current Trailrunner is a 2 way...gas when on the road and electric when hooked up.

Got2go January 14 Mine is a 2 way, it runs on 12 volts from the batteries or propane. When plugged in at campground the batteries are charging and it still uses 12 volts from the batteries.
