MRJohnston March 31, 2020 Were  you told to do that?   I thought permanently mounted tanks were exempt because of the heavier tank construction.

George and Sally March 31, 2020 The propane tank on motorhomes don't need to be recertified they are hard mounted may need to be cleaned and painted if rusty.

JNC330 March 31, 2020 No rust at all.  Hard mounted.  U-Haul guy said it was out of date and needed to be re-certified

MRJohnston March 31, 2020 This I found on the internet so it must be true.    (The U-Haul guy is not familiar with the regs.   ASME are tanks, DOT are the cylinders. ASME: Thicker steel used in their construction A little ...  more

MRJohnston March 31, 2020 Just realized you said it was  2001.  Maybe this is what he was talking about. If necessary: Revalve Propane Tank Since 2002, there has been a regulation that any propane tank that does not have an OPD valve...  more

Jim & Sharon Ham March 31, 2020 MRJohnston is correct, and you need to find a new propane dealer.  We were told the some error by a teenage operator at a campground.  So we drove to the source supplier of all the LP in the county.  No problem filling, and cheaper to boot....  more

rick&dee March 31, 2020 Here is the deal. There are two types of propane tanks. DOT and ASME.  DOT tanks are portable tanks like the one for your grill or the removable ones on your trailer. By federal law, they need to be re-certified 12 years after manufacturing date then...  more

JNC330 April 1, 2020 Thank you all for the information.  I did try Tractor supply and the ladies there could not figure out how to fill my tank.  I will try the U Haul again with a different person and explain the ASME rules to him.  Happy camping to all.

Spiritwolf April 24, 2020 Go where they sell RV's their prices are cheaper

Woz and Marly April 1, 2020 Fire extinguisher service companies have the equipment for pressure testing.  But the cost of having a 20 pound tank re-certified is likely going to be higher than the cost of a new one.

rick&dee April 1, 2020 Our local propane dealer (AmeriGas) charges $15 per tank for re-certification in Alaska. That's DOT tanks. They also said ASME tanks do not need re-certification (permanently mounted tanks)

Jim & Sharon Ham April 2, 2020 Hicks Gas, our local county propane dealer for farms, charges $20 to recertify a 20 pound DOT tank.  Menards sells a nice new 20 pound tank with gauge on top for $34.98.  Our local Menards also has a very large propane tank in their parking lot ...  more

HagerHawk April 16 Being a newbie I experienced this exact same scenario. It came down to inexperienced help at the refill stations (Loves Travel Stop) When I got back home and started searching for some place to get re-certified I learned about the DOT and ASTM rule from m...  more
