April 6, 2020OK, so looking for some advice/information. I am currently in a campground with only 30 amp service My electric heat pump will not run on this service. It is a basement unit. My gas furnace is working fine so not cold (as long as I don't run out of pr...  more

travellinglee April 6, 2020 Portable or not, to do a comparable job as your on-board kit will require a comparable amount of power.  Have you considered getting a 50 amp generator instead, that way you can use your existing kit plus it means you can get your 50amps for other ki...  more

Paul & Kay Legare April 6, 2020 My heat pumps will not function below 37 degrees. Might that be your issue. I don't know how cold your part of WV gets

TeamFoxy April 6, 2020 What is the breaker size for the AC / heatpump? We can run one, but not two, of our A.C. units on 30A service. You may also have to limit using other items like water heater or microwave when using A.C. Also be aware that heat pumps don't work below a cer...  more

pokeysRVadventures April 6, 2020 @ Paul & Kay, It's 43 there right now and will be in the 30's this week. Those temps could be the problem.

KathieRN April 6, 2020 OK, apparently I didn't make myself very clear.  I have a 50 amp RV plugged into 30 amp service and no the temps are not the problem.  It will start up but shut off as if the temps are too cold but they are not.  It is a basement heat pump,...  more

pokeysRVadventures April 6, 2020 Possibly 30 Amps is not enough power to run the heater or AC with the type of unit that you have.

John T April 6, 2020 Kathie RN, great questions, here's an old retired n rusty power engineers response: "However, my question is, if my heat pump isn't working, does this mean my air conditioner won't work either - they are the same unit." ...  more

pokeysRVadventures April 6, 2020 What you posted pretty much covers it all. Not enough power or the temps for that type of unit.

JLF April 6, 2020 My basement air doesn't include a heat pump function, but it does have two compressors in the one unit.  Inside an upper cabinet there is a switch labelled 50 amp that when switched off allows use on 30 amp service by only allowing one compressor to ...  more

Steve&Barb April 6, 2020 There us an adapter that connects two 30 amp together to make a 50 amp female receptacle. 14-50R available at Amazon

JLF April 6, 2020 If anyone is having trouble locating the part using 14-50R, which is just the NEMA number for a 50 amp receptacle, they can narrow their search to "RV 14995" in "Automotive Parts and Accessories".

Samuel Smith April 6, 2020 I have a Winnebago (1999) 50 amp basement unit.  When I am in a campground with 30 amp, I shut off my rear air compressor and the 30 amp runs the front air and distributes through all coach air vents. I have to watch what else is plugged in so I don'...  more

ColoradoCindy April 6, 2020 I am find that a fan cools off my rv if the temperatures aren't too extreme.

Glen & Margie April 6, 2020 Where 30amp only is available, make sure to set your water heater to propane. Then you should be able to run your air unit without a problem. If you use your microwave be sure and turn off
the AC or you will pop the breaker.

pymmint April 6, 2020 I’m not sure I understand the actual “setup” of the OP, I just know I have a furnace than runs off propane AND a heat setting on my thermostat, which come from the same unit as my AC, whenever I tried to run it, I just got cold air, so it never helped at ...  more

MRJohnston April 6, 2020 The Heat Pump is probably working.  It does not function well or at all (blows cold air) below about 40°F as there just is not enough heat left in the air to extract (unless you have an electric strip heat pump).  Also, when turning on the Heat ...  more

Jim & Sharon Ham April 6, 2020 If we assume the RV is really a 50amp power cord that is being reduced to 30amp outlet with an adapter plug, the problem is in the RV internal wiring.  The 50amp service would have two 110 volt hot legs, but the 30amp only 1 hotleg.  Sounds like...  more

John T April 6, 2020 Kathie, when you state "It will start up but shut off" that says to me: 1) It, via your 30 to 50 Amp adapter (ifffffffff that's how you're connecting your 50 amp 4 pin plug RV to a 30 Amp 3 Pin receptacle)  IS IT ????...  more

KathieRN April 17 Thanks all for the advice - my air conditioner did work in the summer time so I am guessing that it was just the fact that it didn't have enough power on the 30 amp service. I won't make that mistake again!!!  It is a pain in the butt to fill the propane ...  more
