John & Linda → Boondockers: April 30, 2020We have a question. We have read that some people are boondocking with residential refrigerators. How is this possible?

I have 1200w of solar and 900ah of lithium batteries as my RR requires only 15amps of DC for inverter to use for the RR 150w AC. plus if no sun for 3 days have 3600w genset to recharge batteries (in 2.5 yrs only needed this twice).
Jim and Jan Hollis July 17, 2021Sounds reasonable without breaking the bank. So - as someone who’s done it, what would 1600 watts of solar be on a 38 foot Type A with no solar now? So - as someone who’s done it, what would 1600 watts of solar be on a 38 foot Type A with no solar now? We did put in 3 new AGM 2700 series batteries and have a 5500W Onan Marquis generator that we use often and have kept in TOP shape with 411 total hours. Our year old residential fridge is a Samsung 18 with its own inverter inside. NOT sure what that means? Our Inverter is 1000w. What say thee? less

One couple added an extra panel and a couple batteries, both the other rigs had sufficient solar and batteries to absorb the extra demand. All of them love the conversion after having it a year.
If mine fails I will not hesitate to get the conversion or find an electric that will slide into the space. If I wind up replacing the rig a residential fridge would not scare me off at all. Just have to add a bit more solar and battery to cover its needs. less

Ok I get it. I have 900w of solar panels and 4-deep water cell house batteries and generator. I have 2003 Allegro Bus is this enough?

John and Linda, my guess is that your 4 batteries are about 200ah. If you are running a 12v system, you have 800ah which you can use 400ah without damaging the batteries. Just figure your usage against your bank of amps.

I plan on taking out the 12cf Norcold and replacing with an 18cf GE residential, almost exact same outside dimensions.

You will not regret this. We took out our dead Dometic 12 cubic foot and went to a Kenmore Elite side by side. Fit in the same space. It was a little taller so I have to cut down the base some.

John & Linda. 230ah x 4 = 920ah/2 to get to 12v = 460/2 (50% of useable ah without hurting batteries) equal 230 ah. IMO, not enough.
Life is the AdventureMay 4, 2020If you have them connected 2s2p, you have 230AH usable @12v. Have you competed an energy audit? That is the only way you will know for certain. Have you competed an energy audit? That is the only way you will know for certain. We replaced a Dometic 8cf absorption model with a Furrion 10cf 12vdc compressor model (fit without modification) and reduced our consumption dramatically. BTW, our system is 2000w on the roof, with 800AH of 24v lithium for storage (4 Tesla modules). less

simple $7000 worth of solar panels, connections, switches, controllers, 6 lithium batteries, and lots of sunshine. simple

We've had our system 6 years, and as fultimers (boondockers), every penny spent has been well worth our investment. We never worry about how much electricity we use day or night.
