Kandy and Darrell → RV Repair Club: July 4, 2020Our water pump makes noise when it is on and water comes out. Does the pump need to be on all the time?

Ours used to make a huge noise. Found out that mounting screws had all come loose. Put a rubber insulating piece under and put better screws in. Quiet as a church mouse now.

Left mine on a couple of times, just simply forgot to turn it off. Learned lesson when check valve from city hook up stuck open. Filled the fresh water tank completely and had a water fall outside at the fill point.

They pulse the diaphragm to move the water so that is what you are hearing. Very normal. You can add some foam rubber or styrofoam between the pump and mounting surface to quiet it down significantly. While the pump pulsates it can transfer energy to the water lines also. You can use the same materials to shield the water lines to keep them from rattling. As long as you have water in your fresh water tank it doesn’t hurt to have the pump on while hooked up to shore water. A lot of us leave the water pump on to maintain constant pressure. You just don’t want to let the pump run dry for extended periods. less

This is all normal. As above, insulating the pump mounts & nearby hoses should help a little. less

Mt older motorhome pump started making more noise than normal an it was the little strainer next to the pump. It had trash in it and i guess making the pump work harder. I cleaned the strainer and the pump noise went down by 30-40%.
