Mark & Deb July 17, 2020 Is your bowl holding water after you flush? Keeping an inch or two of water in the bowl keeps it sealed. I also use black tank treatment backs. There are many brands. Many people talk about the GEO method and sware by it. I have not personally trie...  more

Dreamers and Travelers/ Tom & Prescott July 17, 2020 Our's tended to smell more when empty in hot weather. While replacing flooring, we noticed the toilet seal was pretty well deteriorated from many miles & sort of dry rotted. Also installed a 'shark bite' shut-off valve. No more odors.

Mr. and Mrs. Z July 17, 2020 An option to thoroughly clean your black tank is to put 5lbs of ice in it with water and as you drive the ice will hit side walls and clean the tank.

Rex Deaver July 17, 2020 We have never had a problem with odors, but we had problems with sensors. All the old wives' tales like ice made no difference. Finally used Thetford Tank Blaster and the sensors were perfect. Which tells me black tank was as clean as it gets. ...  more

Silvergreen Sig July 17, 2020 If you have a roof fan going and nothing else open to replace the outgoing air, it will suck it in from where ever it can, even from the toilet, leaky vacuum breakers etc.

Nick & Jody July 17, 2020 I tried 1/2 cup of Borax and 1/2 cup of Dawn.  It seems to work much better.  Take a look at www.trbowlin.com   He has a video that deals with the tanks.   He makes sense and it seem to help with ours.   I also back...  more

JoeTex16 July 17, 2020 I'm assuming you keep a little water in your toilet to act as a fume blocker. If not, that should take care of the problem.

Road Daug July 17, 2020 The roof vent could be clogged or the cap on the top of the pipe is not working

Da Bros July 17, 2020 Do you leave your valves open when you leave? Keep them closed while gone..you can add the smell additives that help while gone also..

Randy & Sue July 17, 2020 Agree with JoeTex16, a little water and chemical addresses the issue.

Jenna & The ZARGON July 18, 2020 Use a "Toilet Seal" lubricant - will help maintain a good airtight fit on the flush valve to prevent gas from coming up.   Or get a new seal. & check to make sure your Vent Stack is clear & maybe put a cap with a fan or one of those Venturi type vent...  more

DjDarren July 18, 2020 sounds like toilet NOT holding couple of inches of water like its supposed to do. maybe seal is bad? you could smear some vasoline on the door to help it seal. Borax is known to be the best for black tanks.
