SnKVWhy didn't I think of that? Tips and Tricks:
October 9, 2020Newbies here and wondering if we can use regular household cleaners in our RV shower, toilet and sinks? Will those chemicals be bad in our grey water tanks?

AZRickey October 9, 2020 Well NO!  Let start with the toilet, there are rubber seals and they don't like harsh chemicals.  We Theford aqua foaming cleaner.  for the sinks and shower my wife uses magic eraser.  Also make sure you use RV toilet paper.  This...  more

TheClearyClan October 9, 2020 We call the Bio-Paks "breath mints for the toilet."

Donna Luke-Peterson October 10, 2020 We actually use a Litter Genie leftover from owning cats for our TP.  Contains it without smells and easy to dump with garbage.  It's similar to the Diaper Genie, little goofy I know, but it works.  We full time RV travel with just the two ...  more

SilverSport October 9, 2020 We stay away from antibacterial soap especially if you use tank treatment. I disagree on the RV TP, we used from Costco Marathon 2-ply, septic safe, individually wrap (great for storing anywhere), been using tor 10 years with no problems, don't ...  more

Bandit455 October 9, 2020 Agree w/ TP comment. You do not NEED to use RV TP, just be sure what you do use is septic safe and fast dissolving. You can use gentle cleaners on showers etc. I personally would not use magic eraser on a fiberglass plastic, just use the tried and true sc...  more

Diana & Michael October 10, 2020 Not all rubber seals in the toilet bowl are replaceable. Our toilet had to be replaced when the seal failed. That happened after full timing for just two years. 😕

Bounder Travelers October 10, 2020 We have tried RV TP and I can think of only one redeeming quality, it dissolves in the holding tank. Its faults are: it dissolves in your hand during use; it costs more; there is less on a roll. about three years ago Gary Bunzer, the technical editor of t...  more

chrismillersc October 10, 2020 If you research it there are several "home" tps that work just as well as rv to and aren't as costly

Daniel and Carol Hamer October 10, 2020 We use Costco septic tank safe TP. Have been using it for years. The secret to have long no issues with your black tanks is don’t be afraid of water. Water is your friend for the blank tank. I also use chemicals in the black tank. They are orange pods and...  more

GaleS October 10, 2020 I use a spray bottle with 50/50 solution of white vinegar and Dawn to clean plastic bathroom fixtures and let it sit for a few minutes. Then scrub with dryer sheets -- they do a great job of cleaning without scratching. There's a lot of information if you search.

Dejavela October 10, 2020 Re: TP...I've heard of some lining a small container, with a lid, to put it in, rather that putting in toilet. In that case, you can use whatever you want. If using any TP, you run the risk of clogging your sewer line, which could be a smelly mess to unclog.

DougLin October 10, 2020 My solution to all the TP issues is to take what we use in the house, put a couple sheets in a pint jar with water and watch for rapid dissolving. If it maintains cohesion too long I don't use it in the camper. No problems with black tank breakdown. We al...  more

Bandit455 October 10, 2020 One other step not mentioned in this thread is prepping your black tank before using. Yes add the chemical of your choice to aid in odors and waste breakdown, but don’t forget to add water to your tank to start the process. I use 4-5 gallons to start( I h...  more

Diana & Michael October 10, 2020 We use Happy Camper black tank treatment.  Nothing anti-bacterial can go in the black tank or the “good bugs” in the tank environment will be upset.

Debbie/Ce/Niki October 10, 2020 One thing you don't want to do is put bleach down the black tank. There are good bacteria down there and bleach will kill the good bacteria. After I dump the black tank and close the valve, I put enough water in my 45 gallon tank to have approx. two inche...  more

See spot run RV October 10, 2020 As for the cleaners you use, we use exactly what we did in our home. We have been 18 months of full time and no problem. I had check with 3 different RV repair shops and they said okay to use what we wanted. We have a class A and all the pipes a...  more

Suzan and Art October 10, 2020 We found that peroxide (used on a cut) dripped into the sink cause a discoloration.  Using Ajax to clean it, cause the coloration in the sink to change. I guess it depends on the quality of the sink. Never had that happen before in our three previous trailers.

Bounder Travelers October 13, 2020 Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizer that can cause bleaching. Don't use it for anything unless specifically recommended.

TheNewMexicoVagabonds October 10, 2020 Use Happy Camper religiously and Digest it (bought from Amazon) And, after a clean out, I put in 1 cup Calgon, 1 cup dish detergent in. (I read it somewhere). Never had a problem!

Clinton & Michelle Orr October 12, 2020 The manufacturer of sinks in our Fifth-wheel said that they recommend using Fantastic and that it was safe for the plastic. I’m not sure how it effects the tanks though.

Kimble & Cristina October 24, 2020 Where can we find liquid Calgon? We have checked all our local retail outlets and have yet to find anything but the tablets.
