February 6Question: The 6 volt house batteries on my Class A...........Am I correct in assuming they charge when plugged to shore power and when running the generator, but do they charge when you are running the engine and traveling?
    • norm and sue and heidi too and 3 others like this.

D&Mtoo February 6 That is usually the case, but what kind of Class A do you have? The user manual should explain it as long as it is stock.

Dean Wang February 6 Yes they charge in all 3 scenarios. Make sure your in use switch is on or they will not be charging.

Bladerunner February 7 So my 2005 Forest River Cardinal 29LE user manual does not explain the charging scenario in detail. So, does the battery just keep charging ? Is there a sensor that terminates the charging process when the battery is fully charged? If the battery just kee...  more

      • bob& donna macintyre
rick&dee February 6 It's just a cheap one on the front dash I can see while driving. I have a more expensive one in the middle of the coach with a shunt on the negative terminal to show volts, amps in and out, percentage of charge, remaining amp hours. Go to Amazon their $15...  more

TeamFoxy February 7 You can easily verify that the house bank is being charged when the engine is running. Read the voltage, at the batteries, with a multimeter with the engine off and again when running. If the votage is higher the batteries are being charged. Every RV owne...  more

bob& donna macintyre February 11 Yes I guess I will have to invest in one

rick&dee February 11 It can take anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes (on my RV) before the engine starts charging the house batteries. I think it depends on the soc of the engine battery. When I first got the RV I thought the engine was not charging the house batteries. After I hook...  more

Mark & Janice February 7 On my 2009 Winnebago Sightseer the house and engine batteries are on two totally separate circuits so the engine alternator does not charge the house batteries I’m told that it’s this way so if the house load is left on too long you won’t kill the engine batteries

JaneG (The Lynn Girl) February 7 don't know if you have an inverter, but on mine, I can tell if they are charging by turning on the inverter and looking at the voltage on the display. If it is more than 12 volts, they are likely charging. Mine charge when plugged in, on the generator, an...  more
