SouthParkSteve Free Camping and Boondocking on Public Lands:
February 10, 2017I apologize if you have seen this multiple times--I have posted in several groups, but have not gotten any responses....so I keep trying other places to see if anyone has an opinion.

Question for those of you who have travel trailers (bumper pull) and bo...  more

Okietravellers February 10, 2017 I don't remember even putting away our things as they can be stolen from cargo bays?

Lexington gts 270 February 10, 2017 When we left our trailer it was not only insured
but had a hensley hitch so no body could hook up to it and take it anywhere. Hitch locks are broken off easily in seconds. Comprehensive
Insurance is the best answer i have .

Okietravellers February 10, 2017 DH used a lock system on tongue also!

Ajwallace February 10, 2017 if you are worried about it, use a locking mechanism (aka trailer coupler lock) to make it extremely hard for someone to hitch it up to another vehicle.

SouthParkSteve February 10, 2017 Thanks, all.  I guess I am just being paranoid.......
    • SouthParkSteve
Benji February 10, 2017 No you're being cautious. If you unhitch they have a lock that goes up like a ball into the hitch. I'd at least put that in it or chain it to a tree. A former NY'r Trust is an issue, call it paranoia, the VA calls it hypervigilant.

Dirty Rotten Racklefrack! February 10, 2017 I'd agree. While someone hooking up your trailer and driving it away is very unlikely, it has happened. Rarely, but still... better safe than sorry. Even if the lock just makes you feel more secure so you can actually enjoy your time away fro...  more

Morganwoody February 10, 2017 I leave mine for all day and leave my stuff out. I don't leave it over night. I also have an rvcommand which gives me some sense of security. But it only works if you have cell phone coverage. Seems like more often than not we are not in a cell coverage area.

Kathy & Paul February 10, 2017 Don't like to leave my trailer unattended when I'm in the boonies, but when I do I have a Reese lock for the ball hitch and I also have wheel lock that may slow a thief down. If someone really wants it they will find a way!..I watched a video of someone j...  more

Benji February 10, 2017 I liked your comment but the thought that someone would steal a trailer like that is despicable.
    • SouthParkSteve
Birdie February 10, 2017 Think in terms of a vehicle. If they want it bad enough, they will steal it. You might even be in it!

Benji February 10, 2017 Robert Miller's comment made me think that Home Depot, I believe on line, has a silent alarm system that notify's your cell phone. It was designed for contractors with  equipment trailers, again it will only work if you have a signal.

Kay and Russ Wallace February 10, 2017 Yes you are being paranoid. I boon dock and leave my trailer and my chairs and carpet in place. Never had a problem. Usually there are other people close by. We are all in this together and I have never seen another boondocker stealing from someone else. ...  more

Benji February 10, 2017 Why take a chance? It only takes a couple minutes to lock the stuff down. At $3000 for my genset, I'll carry a chain and lock.

Colorado Kid February 10, 2017 For me,.... it would depend on where I am. If I'm going to be "gone" a long time / all day; I lock my RV. Athough I have never had any issues / problems In the Colorado Back Country I've left generators, grills and more out side. When I was boondocking in...  more

Kathy & Paul February 11, 2017 Having your home broken into and losing your "stuff",is bad enough but having your whole home go missing . Wow! Susan Johnson February 11, 2017 What would be the odds of your trailer getting stolen. I in a Billion or so I would guess. wandering Jackie February 12, 2017 There are expansion jacks that fit between you tires that can be locked with a padlock. My brother gave me a pair. They help to stop the rocking and make it safer to leave your rig.

Okietravellers February 19, 2017 Those expandable tire "jacks" do help in reducing the trailer's rocking. BUT don't count on them to keep the trailer from moving. On more than one occasion I have forgotten to remove them, pulled forward and noticed them (in the mirror ) pop out and I nev...  more

CJ & AJ February 12, 2017 You're usually good in most places. You might want to lock up a few things. We have not had anything stolen in a year & a half on the road until we stayed at the Air Force base in Denver from Sept.-Nov. last year. Our portable fire pit was stolen in the n...  more

Anne H February 21, 2017 I lock up easily stolen stuff kept outside - but I got the trailer to experience this lifestyle - use a hitch lock, that's all. No problems in over 10 yrs.
